Hopkinsville Fire & EMS is among 24 agencies across the state being recognized by the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and its Kentucky EMS for Children Pediatric Recognition program. According to state officials, this is the second consecutive year Hopkinsville Fire & EMS has been recognized for going beyond what is required by the state in terms of providing pediatric care.

Project Director Morgan Scaggs with the Kentucky EMS for Children says kids account for less than five percent of the patients seen by EMS in Kentucky. She adds while they are happy the number is low, it also means they have less direct experience in meeting their unique needs. She says they have to intentionally practice their skills, review their protocols and keep equipment ready to ensure kids receive the right care when it matters most. Scaggs notes the agencies they recognized have demonstrated that they are committed to improving emergency pediatric care and they are raising the bar for everyone, and they couldn’t be happier to recognize and celebrate them.

To be recognized, state officials say an agency must designate a pediatric emergency care coordinator to ensure integration of the unique needs of pediatric patients into all aspects of emergency care, comply with national recommendations for pediatric equipment carried on the ambulance and engage in pediatric-focused community outreach activities. In addition, there are requirements for pediatric-related continuing education and annual demonstration of pediatric skill competency for al EMTs and paramedics.

Officials say this is the fourth year for the recognition program and all participating agencies will need to reapply annually to demonstrate their continued commitment to excellence in pediatric emergency care.

The recognitions are part of National EMS Week, May 16-22, and EMS for Children Day, which is Wednesday, May 19.
