Committee of the Whole Hears Quarterly Fire Department Report

The Committee of the Whole heard the Hopkinsville Fire Department’s quarterly report Thursday night, which included an increase in residential fires and EMS runs from January through March.

Fire Chief Steve Futrell said there was a 5% increase in fires in the city during the first quarter.

Chief Futrell said the notable calls included 38 fires, 52 vehicle accidents with injuries, and three water rescues where people had driven around barricades and were stranded in floodwaters.

Futrell said their EMS run volume increased in the first quarter, but transfers have decreased.

He noted the COVID calls are continuing to decrease. He said they have gone from 20 to 60 in a month to one or two calls a week.

Futrell said they are starting a community risk assessment this summer that will data-driven which will allow them to see the deficiencies are in the city.

In new business, City Clerk Crissy Fletcher presented the changes the city needed to make to its public records ordinance to comply with changes the state made to the open records statute.

Council voted 8-0 to forward the amended ordinance to the full city council. Alethea West, Kim McCarley, Terry Parker, and Tom Johnson were absent from the meeting.
