Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer for many across the country, and that means getting out on the lake with a boat.
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Sgt. Danny Richardson recently spoke with the News Edge about safety tips to ensure your day of fun doesn’t turn into a tragedy.
Sgt. Richardson said the main rule is to always wear a life jacket when on the water.
He added that every boat over 16 feet needs a throwable personal flotation device.
In addition, every boat should have a sound device.
Another important thing to have on your boat, a fire extinguisher.
If you are going to be out after dark, Sgt. Richardson said your navigation lights must be working.
