Princeton Woman Makes Plea Deal in Fatal Stabbing

A Princeton woman charged with stabbing her estranged husband entered a guilty plea in Caldwell Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon as part of a plea agreement.

Kimberly Smothers was charged with murder-domestic violence after she reportedly stabbed 43-year old Matt Smothers on January 8, 2020, after they got into a verbal argument.

Kimberly and her attorney Andrea Moore appeared virtually before Circuit Judge Woody Woodall, III.

As part of the plea deal, Kimberly pled guilty to an amended charge of first-degree manslaughter, a Class B felony.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Carrie Ovey-Wiggins told the judge Matt’s sister had a victim impact statement.

The victim’s sister told Kimberly she wanted her to know how her actions had affected the family.

click to download audioShe went on to say she wants to forgive Kimberly for taking her brother’s life, but right now she can’t because they have to live with his death every day.

click to download audioJudge Woodall then accepted the guilty plea and imposed her sentence to run concurrently with the 6.5 years she is currently serving for drug trafficking and promoting contraband.
