The installation of a centerline barrier wall along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 24 through parts of Caldwell, Lyon and Trigg counties has been pushed back due to weather conditions this week.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 spokesman Keith Todd says the placement of the centerline barrier was expected to start Monday. However, he indicates rain in the forecast for much of the week has forced a delay. He says the contractor plans to review weather conditions each afternoon and start the installation as soon as the forecast allows several days of continuous work. Installation of the barrier will start near the 51-mile marker and extend eastward along the eastbound lanes to about the 65-mile marker with completion anticipated in early July.
When the installation begins, Todd says eastbound traffic will be restricted to one lane, and the lane restriction will lengthen as the barrier wall installation progresses. Once the more than 13 miles of centerline barrier wall is in place, the contractor will set a date for westbound traffic to be shifted to one lane.
According to Todd, the work zone has a strictly enforced 55 mph work zone speed limit with an enhanced police presence.
Todd says truckers need to be aware there will be different maximum load widths — 15 feet for eastbound vehicles and 12 feet for those going west, due to the barrier wall.
