CCPS Board Approves New Administrator Position to Address Student Barriers

The Christian County school board heard a safe schools presentation at Thursday night’s meeting and approved adding a diversity administrator position in the district.

Jon Akers with the Kentucky Center for School Safety went over various safety plans, including the pros and cons regarding the use of metal detectors. However, he stated metal detectors are not foolproof and he thinks building relationships between teachers and students is more important.

Assistant Superintendent of Operations Josh Hunt said a team from the Kentucky Center for School Safety will be conducting safety and risk assessments at schools on unspecified dates to give the district feedback on areas that may need safety improvements.

In addition, Hunt said they have big plans this fall when students return to school to highly publicize the STOP Tip Line and QR Code.

The board also heard from Kim Stevenson, the Director of Alternative Programs, who presented the job description for a newly created Diversity Administrator position.

She added the position would be funded for three years by using COVID stimulus money.

Stevenson also noted there are currently 124,000 job openings nationwide for districts wanting to hire a diversity administrator.

Superintendent Chris Bentzel said he thinks they need to address all diverse students in the district.

The board unanimously approved a motion by Mike Walker to approve the job description with the stipulation that after three years the position would not be funded out of the general fund but through grants and other funding avenues.

The next regular board meeting will be Thursday evening, July 15, at 6:00 in the Board Room at the Central Office.
