A program that was supposed to start Wednesday will now start Monday for the National Weather Service to warn people of potentially dangerous thunderstorms.
Rick Shanklin, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the Paducah NWS office, told the News Edge this is the biggest upgrade to Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
Shanklin added there will now be three tiers to the warnings, the first being the traditional thunderstorm warning when winds are 58 MPH or above or there is at least one-inch diameter-sized hail.
The ‘destructive’ tag will be the only way your cell phone will go off with the warning information from the National Weather Service. Currently, phones can go off during tornado and flash flood warnings.
Shanklin said there are some easy ways to tell the warning criteria apart when reading the warning text.
