Naturally, the 2020-21 fiscal year for the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library proved challenging, as the coronavirus complicated in-person visits, circulation and typically programming often seen within and outside its walls.
But in her annual update to the Christian County Fiscal Court on Tuesday, HCCPL Executive Director DeeAnna Sova reported the last 12 months have been critically spent updating current services while working to provide new ones — including mobile hotspots for, mobile printing, curbside pickup, printing from home, and self-serve scanning, faxing and printing of important documents.
And there’s some other, more unique opportunities available at HCCPL — including document translation into more than 70 languages (including one famous Star Trek vernacular).
Sova noted monthly averages of around 70 library cards issued, more than 6,200 in circulation, close to 1,500 in Wi-Fi users, more than 390 public computer users, 2,400-plus patron visits and more than 450 “Grab & Go” activities in the last year — in what still proved to be a busy season, despite a pandemic.
With families cramped and camped at home, HCCPL provided entertainment and education options that were desperately needed.
HCCPL has also recently been involved in two new endeavors: a day out with new teachers of the Christian County community, and a partnership with Indian Hills Elementary that’s still in its early stages.
