Discussions surrounding a road name change within the county breathed their final breath Monday night, when the Trigg County Fiscal Court failed to second a motion on the floor to rechristen “Jackie Alexander Road” to “Lane Farm Road.”Former magistrate Donnie Tyler, who served the court for 25 years before bowing out in 2018, stated it wouldn’t be in good show to rename the road — which not only honors Jackie and the Alexander family, but was given its name by the late former Judge-Executive Zellner Cossey.
Tyler referenced a specific action the court took years ago in a renaming to High Point Road, which is located near the Trigg County/Lyon County line, and noted changing its name came only to help county residents gain a local address.
District 7 Magistrate Mike Lane, who brought the original petition to the court two weeks ago with all nine signatures of landowners on the street, said he was doing this for his constituents — which asked for the renaming per KRS statute 179.330.
Lane, who also owns property on Jackie Alexander Road, was approached by property owners about the process, and he said he’d sign the petition if they received all the others.
Once the motion died, District 1 Magistrate Mike Wright and County Judge-Executive Hollis Alexander made it clear that precedent was to keep names in honor of loved ones — in what should be some sort of perpetuity in the process.
With the lack of movement, Alexander noted the issue will not return to the court’s future agenda.
Trigg County Fiscal Court next meets at 6 p.m. on September 7, following the observance of Labor Day.
