The Pennyroyal Center has received a two-year, $4.8 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration through the Community Mental Health Centers Grant Program.

Officials with Pennyroyal Center say these funds will improve accessibility to outpatient treatment and school-based treatment services, expand the Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program into a new county, increase recovery housing options, and sustain Regional Crisis and Emergency Services. They note the Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program provides services to adults with serious mental illness to improve daily living skills and increase their ability to live in the community independently.

Officials say the funding will also allow for the implementation of two new programs — a Recovery Community Center that is a peer-operated center and serves as a local resource of community-based recovery supports — and a regional Quick Response team that provides rapid response when treating individuals for substance-related overdose in local hospitals.

Pennyroyal Center Executive Director Ashley Felts the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on individuals’ mental health and overall well-being. She adds this funding will allow for the expansion of services to ensure accessibility of Mental Health and Substance Use treatment and recovery services moving forward. Coordinator of Clinical Operations Kasey Deal adds they are grateful for this funding opportunity that will allow them to sustain and expand a full array of behavioral health services for adults and youth across the eight-county Pennyroyal region.

The grant received by Pennyroyal Center is one of $825 million in competitive grants awarded nationwide.

Pennyroyal Center is based in Hopkinsville and serves the counties of Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Hopkins, Lyon, Muhlenberg, Todd and Trigg.
