Emergency Preparedness Is Critical All Year

September is National Preparedness Month and it serves to remind us that we all must learn to prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year.

This is especially true for our region considering the nearby New Madrid Fault Zone. But earthquakes are not the only dangers we face. Christian County Emergency Manager Randy Graham says being prepared should be essential for every family.

Depending on the severity of the disaster it could get you and the ones you love injured or killed if you don’t have a plan. I know the reality of preparing, but most people, even those who claim to be prepared, don’t take their preparedness planning very seriously. And no matter how many stories I do about preparedness, a majority of people are going to wait until the final moments to do anything about it. I am using these strong statements because I want you all to be ready when the worst happens. So make a plan today. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area. Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find. There is a lot of good information on the internet.
