A 5th Special Forces (Airborne) soldier at Fort Campbell has been charged with murder in connection to the death of his wife.
According to Fort Campbell Public Information Director Brendalyn Player, 33-year old Sergeant 1st Class Joseph Santiago was formally charged with the murder of his pregnant spouse, Meghan Santiago, and injury of an unborn child. She says the incident occurred at Fort Campbell on September 27.
Colonel Brent Lindeman, commander of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) says Meghan’s death is a tragedy and their thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. He went on to say this tragic event has shaken their entire unit. Colonel Lindeman adds that they take all allegations of domestic violence seriously, and they will provide every resource to ensure a thorough investigation.
Player says Sgt. Santiago, a signal support systems specialist, was first taken into custody on September 28 and held at the Grayson County Jail pending an investigation by the U.S. Criminal Investigation Division (CID). She notes the charges in this case are merely accusations and all soldiers accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Fort Campbell officials say no further information will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
