A former soccer coach and teacher in the Lyon County School System was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release in U.S. Federal Court in Paducah Monday.
36-year-old Michael Derek McCuiston pled guilty to a charge of attempting to possess child pornography in June. The charge stemmed from McCuiston recording a bathroom video of two children under the age of 18 in April 2019.
McCuiston was the physical education teacher for the elementary and middle schools at Lyon County and was the boys’ varsity soccer coach at the time of his arrest.
Lyon County Sheriff Brent White said he received an anonymous tip about McCuiston and alerted school officials.
Police testified that McCuiston’s wife found some images on his cell phone a few weeks before the police began investigating. She said the videos showed a suspected underage female using the restroom.
While conducting a search warrant at his home in Providence in April of 2019, police said McCuiston attempted to alter his phone which led to a felony tampering with physical evidence charge in Webster County.
Police also searched his school office and found a tablet that contained two videos. McCuiston resigned from his positions at the school immediately after his arrest.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Jodi Cohen called McCuiston’s crime a “horrendous crime – made worse because of the defendant’s position of trust as a teacher and a coach.”
