Trigg Schools ‘Grandparents Raising Grandchildren’ Holding Second Meeting Tuesday

Trigg County Schools Secretary and Community Education Coordinator Sarah Elliott is expecting a much larger turnout for Tuesday’s quarterly meeting of “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” at the Little Theater in Cadiz — in which school officials want to continue linking pertinent information and create safety nets between older caretakers and students.

Not many came out for the group’s first-ever meeting on September 7, Elliott noted, in which dignitaries from the Kentucky State Police discussed phone safety and the dangers of technology ranging from predatorial behavior to financial scamming.

But for this second meeting, Elliott said Director of Student Services & Personnel James Mangels will be spearheading a discussion about resources within the Trigg County community regarding both the educational and economical fronts.

And a lot of grandparents in the district have noted they’ll be attending.

As a part of the community education piece of her job puzzle, “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” is a program Elliott wanted to begin prior to the 2020-21 school year. The coronavirus, however, dispensed havoc on in-person meetings — and, as such, school officials waited to unfurl this idea.

Though Elliott couldn’t officially detail how many children in the school system have grandparents as legal guardians, she did say the number is “significant” — significant enough to warrant the need for this budding support group.

Recently, guardians of Trigg County students received an automated call about Tuesday’s meeting, as a reminder to those who may be wishing to attend.

Two more meetings are on the horizon: a March 8, 2022 discussion about health services, and a May 3, 2022 on dealing with learning loss and keeping cognition/concepts fresh in a student’s mind over the summer.

The meetings run from 5:30-7 p.m., with light refreshments and childcare provided.
