The community is remembering the contributions of former Hopkinsville Mayor Al C. Rutland, Jr, who passed away earlier this week.
Rutland, who was 81-years-old, passed away in Nashville.
Rutland’s love for politics began in 1969 when he started serving Hopkinsville City Council. Al C was appointed as Hopkinsville’s mayor in 1975 and served in the capacity until 1981.
In addition to teaching mathematics at Christian County High School for around 8 years, Rutland was famous for serving barbecue as the owner and operator of Rutland’s Barbecue, which his father started in 1948.
Rutland also served in the Army Reserves for six years, beginning in 1963. He was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church and a long-standing member of the Kiwanis Club in Hopkinsville.
In addition to his wife, Jane Carroll Yancey Rutland, Al leaves behind two children and three grandchildren.
