An Illinois man, who previously served jail time as a result of crimes committed in Christian County, was charged after he reportedly shot and killed a Wayne County, Illinois, sheriff’s deputy Wednesday morning.
According to KTVI News, Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley was called to Interstate 64 around 5:00 am near Mill Shoals, Illinois, and was fatally shot by 40-year-old Ray Tate, of Hopkinsville.
The deputy’s vehicle was taken and later found abandoned on Interstate 64.
Around 7:00 am Wednesday, KTVI reports a man was shot in the shoulder and carjacked at QuickTrip in St. Peters, Missouri, and during the investigation, they found evidence connecting Tate to that shooting.
The vehicle taken from the QuickTrip was later reportedly found in O’Fallon, Missouri, in a business park off Interstate 70 where Tate then stole a truck and went back to Illinois with an innocent bystander that he had kidnapped.
KTVI reports Tate was then arrested in Carlyle, Illinois after he barricaded himself in someone’s home.
The person that was kidnapped along with the homeowner were not injured.
Tate is charged with first-degree murder.
Court records indicate Tate served time a number of years ago in Kentucky after entering guilty pleas to charges in Christian County in 2004. He also served time in Louisiana after he fled from Kentucky, then was sentenced in Christian County again in 2013 and turned over to the Kentucky Department of Corrections. He is currently a resident of Illinois.
