U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made a stop in Princeton Thursday morning to meet privately with local leaders and others to discuss the impact of the December 10th tornado and the next steps moving forward with the rebuilding process.
Senator McConnell met in private with Caldwell County Judge-Executive Larry Curling, Princeton Mayor Kota Young, and some members of the community in the Fiscal Court room at the courthouse. After that meeting, he said there are no additional programs on the federal level to help with the recovery efforts but there is funding available through Frankfort to hopefully fill in the voids.
On the local level, Mayor Young said they are working with the businesses that were affected in the city and county, specifically the daycare.
Young also said they will continue to work with Senator McConnell’s office along with state officials regarding the UK Research and Education Center campus that was destroyed.
A representative with McConnell’s office added they are encouraging businesses affected by the tornado to apply with the Small Business Administration (SBA). Mayor Young added residents need to know they can also apply for funding to rebuild through the SBA.
McConnell said he wants the residents to know his office is here for the long-term and will continue to work with the local government to rebuild.
After leaving the Caldwell County Courthouse, Senator McConnell visited the UK Research and Education Center campus and spoke with representatives about the devastation and the issues they are facing in the clean-up and rebuilding process.
On Tuesday, Senator McConnell visited the Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) Operations Center for a tour and briefing with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and KYEM. On Wednesday, the Senator visited Campbellsville, Hopkinsville, and Bowling Green to discuss tornado recovery efforts with local officials as he travels through western Kentucky to visit communities affected by the devastating tornado outbreak last month.
