Proclamation Signed Honoring Gloria Jean Watkins

The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County is partnering with several other agencies to honor and recognize one of Hopkinsville’s most celebrated women as part of its Women’s History Month celebration.

A proclamation was signed Tuesday afternoon at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library proclaiming March 1 Gloria Jean Watkins Day.

Watkins, who took on the pen name bell hooks, was born in Hopkinsville in 1952 and expressed her ideas in poetry and dozens of books exploring race, sexuality, class, and gender.

Alissa Keller, the executive director of the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville, said hooks also changed the face of feminism and fueled the quest for social justice.
