Thweatt, Longtime Christian County Principal, Dies At 91

Legendary west Kentucky boys basketball player, coach and administrator Barney Thweatt died Tuesday, at the age of 91.

Captain of those 1948 Brewers Redmen that finished 36-0 and to this day remains the final undefeated boys basketball state champion in Kentucky, Thweatt went on to play college basketball for Memphis and Murray State University before turning to coaching.

Following successful coaching stops at Oldham County and Paducah Tilghman High School, Thweatt moved into high school administration after 1967, where he served as principal at North Marshall, Mayfield, and Christian County — serving the Colonels from 1973-87 while observing considerable boys basketball success through coaches like Bob Hoggard and Lyle Dunbar.

Over the years, Thweatt served as a member on several boards, including the KHSAA Board of Controls and Marshall County Athletic Foundation, and was KHSAA President and President of the Kentucky Association of Secondary School Principals.

A member of the Class of 2021 Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame, Marshall County officials proclaimed June 27, 2019, as “Barney Thweatt Day” — following his numerous contributions both on and off the court.
