Homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered damage and losses during the December 10 and 11 tornadoes still have time to apply for FEMA and U.S. Small Business Administration assistance — with the final deadline of 11:59 PM, March 14 approaching.
As of Friday, both organizations have approved more than $64 million in total federal assistance for survivors, which breaks down to more than $14 million for housing assistance and disaster-related needs, close to $49 million in SBA-approved disaster loans and more than $800,000 doled out in Disaster Unemployment Assistance.
Of the 16 counties designated for these services, Caldwell, Christian, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Hopkins, Logan, Lyon, Marshall and Muhlenberg are included.
Six counties — including Caldwell, Graves, Hopkins, Marshall and Muhlenberg — were approved for FEMA’s direct temporary housing initiative, and FEMA has already provided more than $2.1 million in rental assistance to more than 1,500 people.
Those who have already applied to FEMA for damage or losses to their primary residences need not apply again, and a reminder that applying with other agencies such as American Red Cross or the Commonwealth does not make someone eligible for FEMA assistance.
To apply for FEMA assistance, visit DisasterAssistance.gov online, use the FEMA mobile app
or call the FEMA Helpline at (800) 621-3362.
Applicants will need a current phone number for contact, one’s address at the time of the disaster, an address for current living arrangements, a Social Security number, a general list of damages and losses, banking information for direct deposit, and a policy number/agent if insured.
It is advised to file insurance claims first before applying with FEMA.
Three recovery centers remain open at this time, including the Dawson Springs Community Center.
Located at 108 W. Keigan Street, it’s closing one hour early at 5 PM Friday, and is open Monday-Saturday from 8 AM until 6 PM.
