KYTC Reports Main Roads ‘Mostly Clear,’ But Stay Cautious

Though the threat of winter weather has passed over west Kentucky, road conditions as of now aren’t perfect.

Officials out of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 2, state that crews have been out in the overnight hours clearing snow and ice from interstates, parkways, and “A” routes throughout the 11-county region — as more than two inches of snow fell between late Friday and early this morning.

As of 4 a.m. Saturday, both “A” and “B” primary routes were reportedly mostly clear.

However, motorists in District 2 should take it slow this morning and well into lunch time, as slick spots still exist on bridges and overpasses here in the Pennyrile.

Keirsten Jaggers, spokeswoman for KYTC District 2, noted crews will be back out late this morning and into the early afternoon to address “C” routes and other tertiary roads.

If one must travel this morning, reduce speed, and give extra time to reach the destination. Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges and shaded areas. These are all primary candidates for black ice that can form on the pavement — and it may be difficult to see.

Please keep a safe distance from snowplows and other heavy highway equipment. And do not pass snowplows on the shoulder.

Eliminate driving distractions such as eating and heavy phone use.

News Edge reporter John Godsey has been out and about this morning, and notes that several local roads are still covered in snow and ice, with some of the most traveled roadways starting to melt and turn into a slush.

In the overnight hours, several wrecks were reported in both Christian and Trigg counties, with one injury wreck on Pembroke Fairview Road — where a truck struck a bridge after the driver lost control on the snow-covered roadway.

District 2 consists of Caldwell, Christian, Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, Hopkins, McLean, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Union and Webster counties.
