While the devastating tornadoes of west Kentucky seem like a distant memory, work does, and will, remain for years to come.
One unique non-profit organization will soon be chipping in to help the people and community of Dawson Springs.
Beginning April 18, 50 volunteers with Sister-Corps will spend four days doing tree cutting, debris removal, drywall hanging and other tornado relief tasks in the city and its outskirts. An off-shoot of Sisters on the Fly, Sister-Corps is part of the largest women’s outdoor group in the country.
Most of the women own travel trailers, and have long been known to turn on a dime and use their mobility for good deeds like disaster relief on extremely short notice.
Past relief efforts have included stops in Port Aransas and Bloomington, Texas, Marianna, Florida, Lake Charles and Iowa, Louisiana, and most recently Houma and Dulac, Louisiana.
Members raise funds and provide “boots on the ground” for short-term relief to communities in need, while helping organize special efforts such as blood drives, environmental clean-up and focus donations to women’s shelters.
Women from 14 states, aged 45 to 80, will arrive in Dawson Springs with funds for supplies, tools, skills, compassion and a “can do” attitude.
