For many high school students, junior year brings with it the focus on American College Testing, or the ACT. Some take it once, but many take it two and three times, trying to improve scores.
Thursday afternoon during his “Team Kentucky” update, Governor Andy Beshear announced that incoming Kentucky high school seniors who have previously taken the ACT will be eligible to take the test for free a second time — during a statewide ACT “Retake Day” this fall.
In calling his administration “education first,” Beshear said there is clear national data showing students are more likely to increase scores on a retake, and thus improve their standing with scholarships, college acceptance — and perhaps open other avenues of opportunity.
That cost Beshear refers to is nearly $40 per test. And Beshear said when the GED was made free from its $200 cost, its application was highly sought.
Beshear further stated that current seniors who have taken the test once will also be eligible to take it on this day — in what could be a boon for spring 2023 enrollment in two-and four-year programs.
The date of the free retake, and locations, will be designated at a later time by the Kentucky Department of Education and in coordination with school districts.
