A Cerulean woman charged with arson and multiple counts of attempted murder was sentenced to 20-years in prison after she entered a guilty plea as part of a plea agreement in Christian Circuit Court Tuesday morning.
Karen Brafman was previously found guilty by a jury on charges of arson, attempted arson, and six counts of attempted murder and given a life sentence but the Kentucky Supreme Court reversed the lower court's decision in December 2020. The Kentucky Supreme Court's opinion stated that Brafman was denied a fair trial when Commonwealth's Attorney Rick Boling opposed the defense motive of intoxication.
In the courtroom Tuesday, Brafman, her attorney Amie Martinez and special prosecutor, Tim Cocanougher, appeared before Judge John Atkins where he read the plea agreement.
Brafman also waived a separate hearing to be sentenced and she was formally sentenced Tuesday by Judge Atkins.
Brafman's guilty plea is the result of charges that stem from May 2018 when state police said she set fire to a mobile home on Princeton Road with two adults and four children inside who were able to escape the home uninjured.
