Trial Date Coming Soon For Curtis

A trial date could be approaching for Cadiz woman Shaylynn Curtis, who is charged with the October 2021 murder of her 5-month-old son.

During her Wednesday appearance in Trigg County Circuit Court, 56th Judicial Circuit Judge Jamus Redd set her next pre-trial conference for 2 PM August 10, and also noted that if a resolution or plea wasn’t on the horizon, a trial date would then be determined.

In a conversation with Redd, Commonwealth’s Attorney Carrie Ovey-Wiggins and her new public defender, Mike Crider, Curtis said she has yet to see the discovery in her case.

Her previous defender, Cody Hooks, has since moved on from the public defender’s office, and Crider said his former co-worker was recently tied up in another trial — but had passed along several details of the Curtis case his way.

During her April 13 appearance, Curtis said she wanted to exercise her rights to a fast and speedy trial.

Curtis is also charged with the abuse of a corpse, trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and second-degree disorderly conduct.

An October 2021 Kentucky State Police investigation revealed that Curtis allegedly took the body of her child, wrapped him in a blanket, and placed him in the attic of her home on East Adams Mill Road.

At the time, the child had reportedly been dead for nearly 24 hours, and reports have further indicated Curtis made no attempts at calls for emergency assistance or medical attention for the infant. Law enforcement arrived following phone calls from associates of Curtis, seeking wellness checks for the child.
