Hopkinsville Community College plans to unveil a statue honoring Hopkinsville native, activist, and author bell hooks on what would have been her 70th birthday later this month.
There will be a ticketed, catered luncheon by Chef Teka and Southern Belle Catering on Sunday, September 25 at 1:30 in the Anderson Room of the Emerging Technologies Building. According to a release from HCC, the luncheon will feature a short program, and guests will then be invited to walk across campus to Round Table Literary Park for a program that will include the unveiling of a statue of hooks.
HCC Foundation President Dr. Lana Bastin called the feature “aspirational in nature, and perhaps the only public sculpture of a child in Christian County.”
HCC President Dr. Alissa Young said the new feature in the Round Table Literary Park will give visitors a chance to see the statue and consider how bell hooks wrote about the challenge of living in authentic love for humanity.
Officials with the college had hoped to announce additions to the park prior to the death of bell hooks on December 15. She was the distinguished professor in residence at Berea College at the time of her death. College officials have been in contact with hooks’ sister, Gwenda Motley, who will join the celebration on September 25.
A limited number of tickets to the luncheon are available for $20 and can be purchased through the college.
