Former State Rep. John Tilley Indicted On Rape Charge

Multiple reports, including the Louisville Courier-Journal, indicate that former Justice Cabinet Secretary John Tilley has been indicted by a grand jury on a charge of first-degree rape.

It’s the same charge he was arrested for two months ago.

A Democrat in the state house for more than a decade, Tilley served as Justice secretary under former Republican Governor Matt Bevin before leaving office in 2019.

According to the Courier-Journal, Tilley’s indictment came last week — with allegations stemming from an April 15 act in which he “engaged in sexual intercourse with [redacted], who was incapable of consent because she was physically helpless.”

Arraignment is scheduled for October 28 in Fayette Circuit Court.

Born in Hopkinsville, Tilley is a graduate of Christian County High School, who went on to graduate from the College of Communications at the University of Kentucky in 1991. He worked for WKYT as both an intern and general assignment reporter before turning to law, earning his Juris Doctor from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.
