Nearly 1 in 8 women will battle some form of breast cancer in their lifetime, with mammography and early detection serving as major anchors for the disease’s awareness and successful treatment.
Friday’s 13th Annual “Pink Out” Celebration at the WKDZ/WHVO Station in Cadiz once again brought these measures to light — with officials from both Trigg and Christian counties offering speeches and proclamations around breast cancer.
In lieu of Judge-Executive Hollis Alexander, Trigg Treasurer Lucy Oliver Kyler declared October 2022 as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” for the county.
Magistrate Mark Cansler and City Councilwoman Alethea West, emissaries for Judge-Executive Steve Tribble and Mayor Wendell Lynch, proclaimed October 28 as “Pink Out Day” for Hopkinsville and Christian County.
Cadiz City Clerk Barbie Johnson, in the stead of Mayor Todd King, noted that breast cancer can be relentless.
The News Edge’s annual “Pink Out” Celebration raises funds for the Pink Ribbon Network, a powerful local non-profit organization that often seeks out and supports women dealing with the struggles of breast cancer and all of its destruction.
Surrounded by other board members in Kathy Anderson, Mary K. Green, Lisa Cunningham and others, spokeswoman Ann Isom noted the group simply offers “whatever is needed at the time,” and that could be school supplies, food, medical bills paid, car and house payments handled. Annual $1,000 scholarships to Trigg, Christian and Todd high school graduates are mainstays from the group, too.
Even recently, the group has been involved in a massive, supportive undertaking.
News Edge President & CEO Beth Mann, herself a breast cancer survivor, keeps a story from Isom close to her heart — and it’s a key reason why the “Pink Out” gathering focuses on the non-profit.
All who have been diagnosed with any form of cancer have had to deal with bouts of darkness and despair. Mann, however, believes hope can be the way.
Mann also recognized the long-running efforts of both the Trigg County and Christian County “Relay For Life” campaigns. Christian County raised nearly $70,000 this year, and they’ve raised nearly $3 million in the last 30 years since beginning in 1993. Trigg County “Relay For Life” began in 1995, and held its Survivors Dinner earlier this week.
