Former Congressman Carroll Hubbard Dies

Former Kentucky congressman Carroll Hubbard died Saturday at the Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Paducah. He was 85.

The Mayfield native was elected state senator in 1967. In 1974, defeated incumbent Congressman Frank Stubblefield in the Democratic primary election to represent Kentucky’s First District in the United States Congress.

He was a member of several committees during his time in office including the House Banking, Finance, and Urban Affairs Committees.

Hubbard served nine terms in the U.S House until he was beaten by Tom Barlow in the 1992 Democratic primary.

He ran for the state senate three times, losing in 2006 and 2008. In 2012, he ran for the District 1 seat losing to Stan Humphries by just under 9,000 votes. In 2020, he switched parties to run as a Republican for the Kentucky House from District 1. He lost in the primary to Steven Rudy, getting just 14-percent of the vote.

Hubbard is perhaps most remembered for personally signing hundreds of thousands of letters and newspaper clippings celebrating milestones of his constituents that included births, marriages, winning school competitions, and more. He also sent countless calendars and Christmas cards to citizens.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Byrn Funeral Home in Mayfield. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 and Saturday morning at 10 with funeral services beginning at 11 Saturday morning.
