Take Precautions Against Cold Weather

With wind chills expected to reach dramatic lows Thursday night into Friday, precautions need to be made to protect yourself and your home from the winter weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for the overnight hours Thursday into Friday. Gary Keeton with Christian County Farm Bureau says there are some quick things you can do to safeguard your home against winter weather damage.

click to download audioAtmos Energy reminds people to never use an oven or a gas stovetop to heat your home. They also encourage people to protect their natural gas meters. Natural gas meters are weather-proof but any snow or ice needs to be removed with a broom or brush.

They also remind you to remove snow from vents for dryers and other natural gas equipment. Blocked vents for dryers and other gas appliances can lead to a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide gas.

If you have to travel Friday or Saturday, Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says to throw a few extra things in your car before you head out on the road.

click to download audioJust remember the four P’s when the weather turns extremely cold — people, pets, plants, and pipes.

Check on elderly people and anyone who lives alone during the cold weather. Bring your pets inside and make sure any pet left outside has an enclosed shelter. Bring any potted plants inside and cover sensitive plants. And cover any exposed outside pipes and allow water to drip from indoor faucets.
