HWEA Cancels Water Shortage Warning

The Water Shortage Warning issued by Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority Tuesday morning has been canceled and all water use restrictions have been lifted.

President/CEO Derrick Watson says customers may resume normal use and consumption.

During this event, he indicates HWEA experienced unusually high water demand and set two consecutive records for water production. On Christmas Day, HWEA delivered 9.55 million gallons per day and on the following day, December 26th, 10.15 million gallons per day were delivered to customers. After further review, Watson says we have determined the dramatic and unprecedented increase in wintertime demand was due to over 165 customer leaks.

Watson further states HWEA issued the warning in order to encourage customers to conserve water and to find and stop their leaks in order to reduce the unusually high demand. He noted that HWEA restricted the washing of vehicles because under City Ordinance, Class 1 usage is the first usage to be curtailed.
