Finley Certifies ‘Right To Vote On Tax Increase’ Petition

County Clerk Carmen Finley confirmed Monday afternoon that the petition from the “Citizens Right To Vote On Tax Increase” has been certified and delivered to the Trigg County Board of Education — putting “the ball in their court.”

What those next steps need to be have been well addressed, and Finley noted the district has 10 days to formulate its response — be it a call for the Trigg Circuit Court to reaffirm or bring the question to the petition, a nod for it to appear on the May Primary, or eventually on the November General.

Trigg’s school board is scheduled to meet this Thursday evening. Finley said that because it’s such a quick turnaround, this likely leaves out any possibility of the local option appearing on the Primary ballots.

Finley also noted that Trigg’s officials could still elect to amend, suspend or remove its resolution from the table — based solely on the response from this petition.

If Trigg County’s board opts not to discuss the petition Thursday evening, a special-called session will have to be in order so Finley and the clerk’s office can prepare for the next phase.
