Trigg Nickel Tax Petition Contained 96% Verified Signatures

In a letter dated January 23 and addressed from the Trigg County Clerk Carmen Finley, officials from the Trigg County Board of Education and the “Citizens Right To Vote On Tax Increases” Committee were both notified of a sufficient petition — calling for a local option vote on a recallable nickel tax.

Requiring 741 valid signatures of Trigg County residents who were registered voters, Finley and her office were able to verify 1,068 of 1,114 names — meaning 46 signees were disqualified from the ranks.

This also means only 4% of the names collected by the committee were forfeited.

Finley’s letter also states that the committee’s petition was filed on January 17, and was sought to “protest the passage of the Resolution or Motion of Tax Levies by the Trigg County Board of Education” — a measure they enacted December 9 of last year.

Of the 46 names that were discredited, most fell under three categories: an incorrect birthdate listed, a poor or illegible signature that didn’t match voter records, or an incorrect precinct designation.

Jack Lackey, Trigg County Schools board attorney, reportedly requested a copy of the petition January 18, at the cost of $88.50 to the Trigg County Clerk’s Office.

The 1,114 names collected filled 176 pages.
