Funeral services for retired Trigg County Superintendent of Schools Tom Vinson will be Friday morning at 11 o’clock at Goodwin Funeral Home.
The 96-year-old Vinson died Tuesday at the Princeton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Vinson was a 1944 graduate of Trigg County High School, served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict, and received college degrees from the University of Kentucky and Murray State.
He began his teaching career at Trigg County High School in 1955 and was named superintendent in 1970. During his time at the helm of the school system, a new football stadium was built in 1970 in addition to a new elementary school and vocational building in 1974. The school system also removed the Quonset huts used for class space when the school burned in 1960 and constructed a middle school gym, new cafeteria, and new band room in the late 1970s.
Vinson retired as superintendent in 1984 after serving as president of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.
He was a charter member of the Cadiz Rotary Club, serving as president in 1969 and 1980. He was a commissioner with the Barkley Lake Water District from 1965 to 1981, serving as chairman during the initial construction and expansion period.
Vinson was also an active charter member of the Trigg County Historical Society and a founding member of the Thomas-Bridges Association.
