It was a cold and dreary morning in Oak Grove, but the Christian County Military Affairs Committee and local government officials stepped up to hand out ‘Hams for Heroes.’
Over 600 hams, purchased from Hampton Meats in Hopkinsville at cost, were handed out to members of the military and Gold Star families who stopped by Thursday morning. The idea came about to help families who may not be able to go home and celebrate Easter with their families.
Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver told Your News Edge the military is essential to her city.
In addition to this effort, the city of Oak Grove commonly hosts a Feeding America food drive open to military members and their families living in the city.
Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight said the military community is vital to his city.
Several employees from both cities and Christian and Trigg County governments, along with other area organizations, were handing out the hams in the 40-degree weather, which felt closer to freezing at times.
Kristi Murtha, Director of the Christian County Military Affairs Committee, said their next focus is on a donation drive to help the families who lost loved ones in last week’s Trigg County helicopter crash.
Monetary donations can be made to the Screaming Eagle Aviation Association. Gift cards can be dropped off at the Christian County Chamber of Commerce office or Hopkinsville and Oak Grove city halls.
