Hopkinsville Police Chief Promises Transparent Crime Report Updates

Hopkinsville Police Chief Jason Newby

At Thursday night’s Hopkinsville Committee of the Whole meeting, the newly appointed police chief assured council members he will be providing them with accurate and honest updates on the city’s crime rate so they can work together to decrease it.

Jason Newby, who was sworn in as police chief recently, informed the group the normal quarterly police department reports they have received in the past have not been providing them with a true picture of the crime in the city.

click to download audioInstead, he plans to bring them a report that more accurately reflects the true numbers of crime in the city.

click to download audioChief Newby added that he is also going to look into why some of the recent crime cases are “being dismissed at an alarming rate and fix the problem.”

click to download audioIn response to a question about needs, he said currently they are working on getting more manpower and have seen a surge in applications from lateral officers and other prospective recruits who want to join the Hopkinsville Police Department.

Newby noted this is a “big deal for the city to have gone almost a week with a no shots fired complaint, adding that the police department will  continue to move forward.
