Gladys “Marie” Combs, 96, of Crofton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday morning, April 25, 2023, at Brighton Cornerstone Healthcare in Madisonville.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 28, 2023, at Dogwood Funerals & Cremations of Crofton with the Rev. Kim Combs officiating. Burial will follow in the Combs Johnson Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 12:00 p.m. until the funeral hour. Dogwood Funerals & Cremations of Crofton is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born on December 23, 1926, in Salem Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Stanley and Almira Frey. At a very young age, she accepted Christ as her Savior and was a church member wherever she made a home. After moving to Crofton in 1996, she became a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
In 1948, she graduated from the Episcopal School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa. Two years later she graduated from Philadelphia College of the Bible. In 1950, she also became licensed to practice Midwifery in Pennsylvania.
She began her nursing career at Homeplace Hospital in Ary. There she met her future husband whom she dated and corresponded with over the next three years until he was discharged from the Air Force. She married that Airman, Samuel Combs, on August 27, 1955, at the Bible Protestant Church in South Canaan, Pa. Together they had a full life working and raising their family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Samuel Combs, and her siblings Stanley (Betty) Frey, Jr., Frances Temperton, Roger Frey, and Conrad Frey.
She is survived by her six children; Scott (Carolyn) Combs of Baltimore, Ohio, Helen (Clay) Ogles of Newark, Ohio, Janet (Jeff) Sidwell of Frazeysburg, Ohio, Leslie (Diana) Combs of Crofton, Keith (Christina) of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Laura Combs of Granville, Ohio.
Marie is also survived by 16 grandchildren and their spouses, 16 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
