A May 26 mediation was possibly successful for Trigg County woman Shaylynn Curtis.
Charged with abuse of a corpse, murder, first-degree trafficking methamphetamine and second-degree disorderly conduct related to the death of her 5-month-old son, Curtis appeared in Trigg County Circuit Court Wednesday morning — receiving some drawn paperwork from her defense attorneys Katy Riley and Mary Rohrer, as well as Commonwealth’s Attorney Carrie Ovey-Wiggins.
However, the paperwork isn’t complete, and Circuit Judge Jamus Redd confirmed he and the court would prefer to assess and review the plea agreement, and take it under advisement, before it’s publicly issued.
In order to accommodate all parties, Curtis will appear again at 10 AM Monday, June 19 in the small district court room of the Caldwell County Courthouse in Princeton.
While it seems likely Curtis will take the plea deal, she does have a choice. She could, in theory, rebuke the penalty and seek a different outcome, or she could once again plead not guilty and go to trial — which, at this time, is set for July 24.
A 2021 Kentucky State Police investigation also led to charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, and was part of the discovery in which an infant was wrapped in a blanket and placed in her East Adams Mill Road attic.
