An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for portions of western Kentucky from Thursday morning to Friday evening.
Officials from the National Weather Service in Paducah said that highs up to 100 degrees with heat indices up to 112 will be possible on both days. They added that extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
The high temperatures are tied to broad, record-setting temperatures that have been occurring across parts of Texas. The region has not seen a couple of days in a row of triple-digit heat since 2012.
Weather officials said to be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors on both days.
They added young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, especially during hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
