A new distillery is coming to the area – Golden Pond Distillery in Canton will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday.
Owner Jimmie Smith says the distillery will start out with 100-proof “white dog” moonshine and will have six flavors for visitors to try on Saturday: blackberry, butterscotch, butter pecan, peach, salted caramel, and Smith’s personal favorite: muscadine. Smith has plans to eventually make aged moonshine, then bourbon.
The distillery will open its doors to the public for the first time at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

click to download audioThe “between the rivers” area has a rich history of distilling- Smith says there was a lot of whiskey made in Golden Pond and a lot of people made whiskey, including his ancestors. Smith is a fourth-generation distiller and says opening his own distillery is something he has always wanted to do.

Golden Pond Distillery is located at 97 Canton Lane in Cadiz.
