It’s been a banner week for the city of Oak Grove, and it’s not even the midweek.
During Tuesday morning’s Christian County Fiscal Court meeting, magistrates unanimously approved the municipality’s request for consent to annexation release and restrictive covenant — essentially giving a hearty welcome for growth at the state line.
The news came less than 24 hours after Governor Andy Beshear revealed that the Oak Grove Racing, Gaming & Hotel will be one of 14 in-person locations across the state when sports betting officially opens September 7.
While the two moments are only slightly related, it’s a sign of things to possibly come for the southern portion of the county — which Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam openly noted “needed more housing.”
Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver agreed.
According to the U.S. Census, Oak Grove’s population has grown 5.9% from 2010 to 2020 — up to nearly 8,000 people inside its city limits.
Having been bequeathed with full authority, Oliver said their annexation rights can now be governed at the city council level.
Among the many things Oliver is hoping to see come of the annexation: a new elementary school.
Much like in the ilk of Pembroke and Crofton.
Oliver also presented to the panel news of this weekend’s Kentucky Bands, Bourbon and Wine Festival — the first of its kind for the city of Oak Grove.
It’s set for noon until 9 PM Saturday at Valor Hall.
