Goff Named Interim Director For Christian County Animal Shelter

Magistrates and Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam made it official Tuesday morning when they unanimously approved for Melissa Goff to take over the interim role as director for the Christian County Animal Shelter.

Under a 90-day probationary period beginning August 1, Goff will earn a salary of $38,500.

Gilliam said he believed Goff “would do a good job,” and it’s a position she will hold while county officials seek a replacement for the retiring Irene Grace — who served the communities of Christian, Trigg and Todd for more than 20 years.

Goff will be considered for the permanent role.

Meanwhile, Goff and the staff at 2935 Russellville Road in Hopkinsville were incredibly busy last month.

In her report for June, she said 583 animals in all came through the office: 404 by drop off, 79 from Hopkinsville Animal Control, 23 from Oak Grove Animal Control, 20 from Trigg County, 12 from Todd County and 45 by return.

That’s an average of more than 19 animals per day.

More than 190 animals were adopted out in June, too: 39 by rescue, 22 by reclaim, and more than 150 categorized as outgoing.

She said more than $3,200 came their way by designated donation, more than $1,000 was collected during the popular “Dog Days of Summer” event held in conjunction with the 400-Mile Yard Sale, and more than $1,100 was garnered in sales taxes during those 30 days.

Next on the animal shelter’s schedule: a Liberty Stay-And-Play Rescue Day, set for 11 AM to 3 PM July 29 at 8004 Pembroke Road.

Gilliam once again thank Irene publicly for her efforts.
