Celebrating 10 years of success Murray State University’s main campus in Murray, officials cut the ribbon on “Racers Helping Racers” Thursday afternoon at the MSU Regional Campus in Hopkinsville — officially opening a food pantry for students in and around Christian County.
MSU’s Director of Student Life, Student Services and the Curris Center, Re’Nita Avery said the college is filled with obligation and a mission to care, serve and support students, and that providing food options for those in need can be a great place to start.
Avery thanked MSU Board of Regents Leon Owens, Virginia Gray and Dr. Jessica Evans for their Thursday appearance, as well as the support from Christian County Chamber of Commerce President Taylor Hayes — in order to make this food pantry a reality.
Murray’s food bank has been in place since February 14, 2014, and is now open from 10 AM until 2 PM Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the spring and fall semesters, as well as 10 AM until 2 PM Mondays and Wednesdays during the summer and winter break. They only close for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, and there’s a hope for Hopkinsville’s hours to be similar.
Murray’s food bank also has curbside service, in which students can place an online food order once a week, to be picked up Tuesdays and Thursdays. All information is kept confidential. Again, another service hoped to be offered in Hopkinsville.
Avery says they’ll glad take donations if anyone feels the call to do so, and you can contact her to find out what type of donations they need, from food items to personal hygiene products. For more information, call the regional campus at (270) 707-1525.
While food drives and food donations are helpful, MSU also allows students to pay parking tickets via donations to their food pantry.
To receive assistance, simply provide your Racer Card Student ID. No questions are asked.
