Spikes Trial Delayed Until At Least March 2024

Charged in the December 2021 murder of Christian Countian Stanley Bussell, and a person of interest in the related death of 34-year-old Candice Marcel, delays continue in the pending trial for Bobby Spikes.

During Wednesday morning’s Christian County Circuit Court docket, Madisonville’s Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Kathryn Senter told Judge John Atkins it would be quite some time before all DNA materials were returned to the evidence pool.

Defense Attorney Eric Bearden and Spikes, who has dual addresses in Caldwell and Christian counties, both noted they expected these kinds of delays. An August 28 trial date has already been vacated and continued by Atkins.

Bearden also informed Atkins and Senter that a report and discovery involving cell phone data has yet to be returned to either counsel.

Because of this pause, all parties affirmed that a new trial date for Spikes can’t occur until at least March 2024 — and perhaps later. Bearden told Atkins he has plans to refile and renew a bond motion for Spikes — one that was original filed by a previous attorney.

Atkins agreed, and set the next pre-trial conference for November 1.

Atkins also asked about notice from Trigg County, to which Senter and Bearden said again there’s been no recent detail. Possible charges could be coming from Commonwealth’s Attorney Carrie Ovey-Wiggins, because Marcel’s body was found inside a car located on Trigg County’s Cerulean Road.

Kentucky State Police has previously reported that Marcel allegedly lured Bussell to her Hopkinsville residence, where her boyfriend, Spikes, who was known to frequent the home, shot Bussell in the head.
