Fort Campbell Helicopter Crash Memorial Proposed To Trigg Fiscal Court

Trigg County Fiscal Court is considering a proposal to locate a Fort Campbell Crash Memorial near the Lake Barkley State Resort Park Airport.

Retired Army Aviator Jack Smith told Trigg County Fiscal Court during Tuesday’s meeting that he began thinking about a memorial soon after the March 29 crash that claimed the lives of nine Fort Campbell soldiers.

click to download audioSmith, who was joined by retired Army aviator Ken Culwell and Army veteran Chappell Wilson, says the crash site was initially considered, but they feel like a memorial near Smith Broadbent Field would be more fitting.

click to download audioHe adds they are hoping to gain access to the property to begin construction of a memorial to honor the soldiers who died during the crash.

click to download audioCounty Judge-executive Stan Humphries says the next step in the process will be to draft a resolution seeking permission to construct the memorial. He said then a committee would be appointed to start raising the needed funds to build the memorial.

In a related announcement, Judge Humphries said a sign honoring the soldiers will be unveiled near the crash site on October 23, at 9:30 a.m.
