A new attorney has taken over the manslaughter case of a Hopkinsville woman charged with an overdose death earlier this year.
Jakiyah Hinton was indicted in May on a charge of second-degree manslaughter stemming from the April 13 death of a person identified only as M.S. on the true bill. It’s alleged that Hinton provided a Schedule I or II controlled substance that led to the death.
During a pretrial conference on Wednesday afternoon, Hinton and her new attorney, Sands Chewning, appeared before Judge Andrew Self. Chewning informed the court that he had just taken the case and still needed to get a copy of the discovery materials from Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen.
Judge Self acknowledged receiving a letter from Hinton expressing her desire to expedite a resolution of the case.
