Three Years Later Burger Barn Closing In Cadiz

Officials with “The Burger Barn” in Cadiz announced over the weekend and through social media that they will be permanently closing — their last day on Jefferson Street planned for this Saturday, October 21.

The revelation comes less than three years from their official open date of March 18, 2021, when Jeannine Johnston and husband, Eric, told the News Edge they had received “a lot of support” from the local community, and were looking forward to the venture after relocating from northwest Indiana.

On opening day, the restaurant employed close to 30 people — most of them high-school-aged students and young adults.

On December 1, 2020, Cadiz Mayor Todd King and the Cadiz City Council approved rebates for the restaurant in the amount of a two-thirds rebate on payroll taxes for three years, a 100% rebate on the business license for two years, a $2,500 grant for exterior improvements, a direct expenditure incentive of $2,500 each year over the next four based on direct revenue to the city, and a sign permit rebate of $56.26.

Cadiz City Clerk Connie Allen wasn’t on the job then, but is now, and she confirmed “The Burger Barn” had met its incentive marks during the calendar — but hadn’t approached the city about renewal.

In their Facebook post, Burger Barn officials noted they will be open normal hours this week and will have great food and drink specials each day. Their T-shirts and hoodies will be available at great prices, and those who have gift cards will be able to use them at the expanded Kenlake location — which has come about in the last 24 months.

In 2021, King presented the Johnston family with a key to the city during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

In 2022, the Johnstons were presented the Trigg County Chamber of Commerce’s “Horizon Award” — for being a successful business opened within the last three years.
