Jane Carroll Yancey Rutland passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023 in Nashville, TN.
She was born in Nashville on July 31, 1942 to her loving parents, Dr. Charles Raymond and Elizabeth Boyers Yancey. She was preceded in death by Al C. Rutland Jr., her devoted husband of 58 years. After graduating from Hopkinsville High School in Kentucky, Jane Carroll attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Thereafter, she returned to Hopkinsville to work at First City Bank, where a mutual friend introduced her to Al C. In September of 1965, the couple were married in Hopkinsville, where they also raised their two children. While growing up in Hopkinsville, Jane was a member of First United Methodist Church. When asked about her upbringing she said she lived a “charmed life” and felt very blessed to have had such wonderful parents. Jane was actively involved in the Junior Auxiliary in Hopkinsville where she served for many years in multiple capacities, creating fond memories such as her involvement with the talent show and working at the concession booth at the Western Kentucky State Fair. Jane actively worked with Al C., supporting him in all endeavors including time spent at Rutland’s Barbecue and Catering. Jane, Al C. and their family regularly attended the First Presbyterian Church in Hopkinsville.
In their retirement years, Jane and Al C. made lifelong friends while spending the winters in the Florida Keys. Jane’s greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her children and grandchildren, whom she dearly cherished. She made spending time with her family her highest priority, whether that was attending their sports and activities, traveling, or simply having family-time together. You could always find Jane in the kitchen cooking, talking, and creating memories that would last a lifetime. She loved life, loved to laugh, and was always at the center of the conversation—and would never hesitate to participate in lively conversations happening around her.
Jane is survived by her two children, Elizabeth (David) Newman of Nashville, TN, and Yancey (Libbie) Rutland of Hopkinsville; and grandchildren Jack Byrd, Caroline Newman, and Charlie Rutland. The family would also like to thank special friends Kathy Warfield of Hopkinsville, Becky Pardue of Nashville, as well as the many friends/staff at the Meadows in Nashville and Covington’s in Hopkinsville for their care of Jane during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund for Jane Rutland at 303 E. 9th Street, Hopkinsville, KY 42240, First United Methodist Church 1305 South Main Street, Hopkinsville, KY 42240, or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
