Special Prosecutor Takes Over in Spikes Murder Case

A special prosecutor has been named in the case of a Hopkinsville man charged with a 2021 murder and is a person of interest in a second death.

Ohio County Commonwealth’s Attorney Blake Chambers has been appointed in the case of Bobby Spikes, who is charged with the December 2021 shooting death of Stanley Bussell at the Clearman Court home of Candace Marcel. Bussell was found by Hopkinsville Police and later in the day, Marcel was found dead in a vehicle in eastern Trigg County.

No charges have been filed in Marcel’s death to date as investigators continue their work in determining where she was killed.

During a Wednesday morning appearance in Christian County Circuit Court, Chambers said he needed more time to go through evidence and speak with the families of the victims.

Public defender Eric Bearden requested a bond modification hearing for Spikes, who has been in jail for just over two years. He also asked for a trial date to be set.

At the same time, Spikes informed the court he wanted to fire Bearden as his counsel and expressed frustration at the pace of his proceedings.

Circuit Judge John Atkins informed Spikes that Bearden will remain his court-appointed attorney and that Spikes’ case is a complicated one and delays are unavoidable.

Spikes, who had addresses listed in Hopkinsville and Princeton, is expected back in court on February 5 while both sides await an indictment concerning the death of Marcel to come from either Christian or Trigg County.
