During Tuesday night’s special-called Cadiz City Council meeting, Police Chief Tyler Thomas reflected on what was an active 2023 for the department — one filled with concerns and improvements in various categories.

It was a year that saw him take over for the retired Duncan Wiggins, who then returned to be part of the eight full-time officers on staff. Thomas confirmed that an additional officer will likely be added by the end of January, leaving one position of patrol officer remaining to be filled.

Over the last 12 months, the CPD found itself involved in the following scenarios:

— 426 investigations, including 32 for juveniles
— 109 arrests
— 4,474 calls for service
— 456 traffic stops
— 424 citations issued
— 114 vehicle collisions with 15 resulting in 19 persons injured
— 156 complaints were lodged under suspicious activity
— 134 alarms summoned police
— Of 56 thefts, 21 were categorized as shoplifting
— 308 calls were for legal advice
— 176 calls were for reckless driver issues
— And 590 business checks were completed by regular patrols

This included a busy December, which saw the Cadiz Police involved in 43 investigations, 13 arrests, 413 calls for service, 35 traffic stops, 41 issued citations and nine vehicle collisions luckily resulting in zero injuries.

All told, Thomas said this averaged to more than 12 calls per day, or one every two hours. And there was a bit of a positive trend.

Should one have an emergency, call 911.
